Everything sold competes for the buyers money. Which means the quality your book is what separates it from the others. When pricing your book, you should depend more on its category or genre rather than depending on its production costs.
In the USA alone more than 100,000 titles are published each year. Making it to the top ten percent of the books sold means your book should have the quality and value all readers are looking for. Your book must be appealing and helpful at the same time it must have a reasonable price.
If you price your book too high, it simply won't sell. If you price it too low, the readers will see it as a low quality book. Price your book according to its content. Not too high, not too low.
How exactly do you price your book? You ask. Here are a few guidelines to help you in pricing your book.
Go to a big bookstore. Be sure this bookstore sells the same genre or category as your book. Look for the expensive ones, the cheap ones, and the ones in between that have the same genre as your book. Look for the similarities between the books. Are the expensive books those with hard covers? Were they written by famous authors? Are they thick and have a lot of pictures? Are the cheaper ones the opposite of the expensive ones? Do they lack content? How about those in between?
Choose the books that appeal to you the most. List down the features you want your book to have. Planning the specifications of your book early will help you estimate the printing costs. Printing will be the most expensive part of publishing your book.
Don't forget that your book must have a reasonable price for your market. There is a maximum and minimum price that your readers will pay. Go too high and generate no sales. Go too low and the readers will assume it is useless. The readers are the judge to whether you've priced your book reasonably or not.
The printing cost will be your basis when determining how much to charge for your book. Some publishers price the books eight times its production costs.
You should promote your book. Your book may be the best of its kind and the most reasonably priced but how will the readers know about it if you don't promote it. Promotion is your best weapon if you want to generate high sales.
If you price your book reasonably enough it will sell wherever you put it.
