Fantasy novels are the most exciting stories to write. It gives the author so much freedom about every character and event of the story. Fantasy stories allow authors to play with their imagination to the fullest. Writing fantasy is like playing God. You have every single thing under your control. You dictate the setting, the scenario and the characters traits and skills. However, to be really good in writing fantasy, you must be able to make your story close to life. Yes, it is fictional and fantastical but still, readers might criticize you if your story is pure invention without basis of history, science and common sense. Readers are smart and intelligent. They may readily throw a book in the fire if they think its stupid. And believe me, they know one when they see it. So as a fantasy book author, you should be prepared to do your assignment like a good student.
The first thing you have to know is your main character, or main characters. You have to know them thoroughly because the whole story will evolve around them and all other sub-stories will have relation to them and their quest. So you have to build your characters completely well. To achieve this, you can write a biography of your characters separate paper that would guide you in writing the story. This will ensure you don't go astray from their personalities. Every single act and decision your characters make should be in accordance to each of their personality and life history. A smart reader will notice things that are done out of character. So be careful with that.
Secondly, you have to arrange your history clearly, too. The chain of events should be properly constructed and noted in a separate record so you don't mix up your events. Create a timeline to avoid confusion and overlaps of occurrences and be sure about the age of your characters in relation with the chronology of events. It would also help a great deal if you draw a family tree of your related characters. In most fantasy novels, the bloodline is a very crucial element.
Thirdly, know each and every detail in your created world. A fantasy world without details is empty. You are the God of this world, you have the power to create and destroy. You have the authority to make up the rules, but be sure you are smart enough and well-researched to do this. Even though it is an entirely made-up world, it still has to be believable and logical.
